'It's Unconstitutional': More CA Cities Looking to Opt Out of Sanctuary Law

As Trump begins dismanting auto efficiency rules California is doubling down on its own sources say

The all-Republican supervisors of the Southern California county of 3.2 million people were expected to discuss passing a resolution in support of Los Alamitos and whether to join the US government's lawsuit over the law, which bars police in many cases from turning over suspects to federal immigration agents for deportation.

The sheriff's department in a major Los Angeles metro area county announced Monday that it will begin publishing a list of inmate release dates, spurning a provision of California's sanctuary state law that limits communication between local officials and immigration authorities.

The 18 state coalition filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting the Trump administration's lawsuit against California over state laws that intentionally obstruct the federal government's ability to enforce the nation's immigration law, according to Wilson. But the goal is to assist agents with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. "And that means bolstering our cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and stopping our county from becoming a sanctuary for criminal illegal immigrants".

Orange County, which is home to Disneyland and wealthy beach communities where many people vacation, has a five-member board of supervisors, and all are Republican.

Although it broke 50-45 for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, Orange County is something of a conservative enclave in deep-blue California. "The law, however, does not limit information that is available to the public". The city council in Lost Alamitos voted 4-1 to exempt the city from SB54 earlier in March, and other Orange County municipalities are considering a range of resolutions to express their opposition to the law.

Sameer Ahmed, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, said some cities appear to be discussing largely political resolutions, not local laws like Los Alamitos. Sheriff's deputies, however, will still not be able to assist in an actual transfer to ICE agents under state law.

That has in turn inspired officials in other parts of the states, including Orange County, Aliso Viejo and Buena Part, to consider doing the same.
