JUST IN: Singer Daler Mehndi convicted on human trafficking charges

Daler Mehndi has been sentenced to 2-years in prison after being convicted in a 2003 human trafficking case by Patiala Court. Daler and his brother Shamsher Singh, allegedly illegally sent people overseas on the pretense that they'r the members of their singing troupe. The 10 people included three women who were illegally migrated t0 San Francisco.

The human trafficking case was registered in 2003 following a complaint by one Bakshish Singh, a resident of Balbehra village, in Patiala district. According to Singh's complaint, Daler Mehndi, his brother Shamsher and others had taken money from them to the tune of Rs 1 crore on the pretext of taking them overseas. Hefty sums were charged from them.

Soon after, a case was registered against Daler and Shamsher by the Patiala Police based on a complaint by Bakshish Singh who alleged that the brothers had taken "passage money" from him to migrate to the United States "illegally", but had failed to do so. Patiala Police had even raided the offices of Daler at Connaught Place in New Delhi and seized documents, including the case file of those who had paid the alleged "passage money" to Mehndi brothers.

Daler Mehndi has been immediately granted bail in the case.
