National Geographic addresses 'appalling' racist past

After 130 years of publication, National Geographic magazine is reckoning with its past, saying its coverage of people of color both and in and outside the United States was for generations "racist".

Writing as the first woman and Jewish person to helm the magazine, Ms. Goldberg introduced the April issue which focuses on race by stating "when we made a decision to devote our April magazine to the topic of race, we thought we should examine our own history before turning our reportorial gaze to others".

The magazine asked an academic to look through past editions, which date back to its founding in 1888, and found that its coverage showed different groups as exotic or savage, propagating "every type of cliché", editor Susan Goldberg said.

It made a decision to re-examine its coverage to mark 50 years since civil rights leader Martin Luther King was murdered.

Goldberg, the first female editor of the magazine, said Aboriginal Australians were called "savages" in a 1916 story; California cotton workers were dubbed offensive slurs like "pickaninny"; and admitted that Haile Selassie's coronation as Ethiopia's king in 1930 wouldn't have been covered if he was a black man in America.

He wrote that the publication only portrayed non-white Americans as domestic staff and labourers, perpetuating negative stereotypes.

University of Virginia associate professor John Edwin Mason said National Geographic had served only to reinforce racist attitudes in a magazine with "tremendous authority".

"It's not a ideal article, but it acknowledges the oppression", Mr Mason wrote. No black South Africans were interviewed for the essay.

But the historian also acknowledged the good work the magazine did even during this period in showing its readers the wider world.
