Tubby Smith fired as Memphis basketball coach

Memphis coach Tubby Smith makes a kicking motion during the second half of the team's NCAA college basketball game against Wichita State in Memphis Tenn. Smith has been fired as Memphis men's basketball coach after two seasons amid dropping attendance

Coach Tubby Smith is out at Memphis as head coach, the school confirms to multiple sources. "Details are to be finalized, and no further comment will be offered", a statement from the athletic department read. He struggled on the recruiting trail, and failed to reach the postseason in either season in Memphis.

Asked upon leaving the meeting if he was still the Tigers head coach, Tubby Smith simply said, "No". He also spent time with Tulsa, Georgia, Minnesota and Texas Tech.

Memphis' biggest win this season came February 22 with a 91-85 upset of No. 23 Houston, only the second such win by the Tigers under Smith.

US Navy jet goes down near Naval Air Station Key West
Barbie Wilson, who lives nearby and witnessed the crash, said she "saw fire" and "then [the jet] just dropped". Navy F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed off the coast of Key West, Florida, on Wednesday, an official told Fox News.

Attendance is the lowest it has been at Memphis in more than 50 years and one of the two recruits Smith is bringing in for next season is an unranked shooting guard. After beating USF in the American tournament opening round Thursday, Smith said he felt "pretty comfortable, pretty confident about what we've done this year and how we're growing the program". The Tigers finished the season with an RPI of 106 and a strength of schedule of 112 a decade after losing in overtime of the national championship under then-coach John Calipari. Still, the Tigers were able to win seven of their final nine games.

Information from ESPN's Andrea Adelson was used in this report. With an ultra-talented crop of recruits in the area on the horizon - a lot of them with connections to Hardaway through his AAU program or high school coaching - it isn't a shock that the school wanted to shake things up.
