A Peek Into The Markets U.S. Stock Futures Signal Higher Start On Wall Street

Pressuring the blue chip market was a more than 2 percent drop in shares of Boeing, Caterpillar and United Technologies.

The S&P 500 slipped by 0.1 per cent, while the Nasdaq lifted by 0.4 per cent, driven by gains in technology stocks.

Friday's data and reaction were a marked difference from January jobs report last month, when a jump in hourly earnings growth sparked the first correction for the Dow and the S&P 500 in roughly two years.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 96 points to 25,456.00, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index futures rose 9.45 points to 2,798.00.

Volatility can also push markets higher especially when it comes to the outlook for inflation and interest rates.

Friday's gains coming after weak wage growth figures eased investors' concerns that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates more quickly. At 1230 GMT, investors will get the opportunity to react to the latest US data on consumer inflation.

"The big multinational, industrial companies of the world are all taking a hit on the concern that they will be the targets of reprisal sanctions", said Robert Phipps, a director at Per Stirling Capital Management in Austin. "The rise of trade hawks in the White House casts a dark shadow over trade in Asia", said Mizuho Bank in a report.

Oclaro (OCLR.O) jumped 27.5 percent after laser and optical fibre specialist Lumentum Holdings (LITE.O) said it would buy the optical components producer for $1.7 billion. Lumentum also rose $4.33, or 6.3 percent, to $73.30. Shares of the DowDuPont were down 1.2%.

The Dow's overnight losses came after an nearly 2 per cent gain for Wall Street last Friday. Shares of Biogen were down 2.2% while Pfizer fell 0.4%. The company said Jeff Fettig will become its new chairman.

Shares of Broadcom Ltd. (AVGO) rose 3.6% (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/broadcom-plans-to-redomicile-to-the-us-within-3-weeks-2018-03-12) after the Singapore-based semiconductor company said it expects to complete its relocation to the U.S.by April 3. Shares of the company were up 0.6%.
