Zimbabwe's ex-leader Mugabe: My errors weren't that bad

Mr George Charamba

I will not lose sleep over those who would want to boycott because that's a democratic decision. He said the elections would be held between July 31 and August 22 in line with the Constitution which provides for the polls to take place within 30 days of the end of the incumbent Head of State's term.

The ousted leader insisted he would not work with Mnangagwa and suggested that his presidency was "illegal" and "unconstitutional".

Mugabe was forced to quit when the military stepped in and ZANU-PF lawmakers launched impeachment proceedings against their once beloved leader. President Mnangagwa said the process of amending the Electoral Act would soon be completed as discussions are now underway in Parliament.

The new president will face his first major test in August, when the new National Patriotic Front hopes to unseat him in elections.

President Mnangagwa, who is also Zanu-PF's First Secretary, said he would still meet opposition political parties' leaders over the upcoming elections but will not lose sleep over those who would want to boycott the polls.

The country's problems have not been solved by the change in leadership - while many were optimistic after Mr Mugabe resigned, they are disenchanted to see that the authoritarian system in many ways still remains.

He said he did not hate President Mnangagwa but the 75-year-old had "betrayed the whole nation".

"Today he appears on foreign media which he banned and claims he must be invited to a transitional process for Zimbabwe #RetireInPeaceBob".

"If anything, in comparison to other countries in Africa, we have had greater prosperity here and people have their land", he told ITV News.
