Cladding fire risk for 12000 Queensland buildings

Grenfell disaster probe 'finds race to the bottom' in buildings safety practices

The government will pay in full for councils and housing associations to remove and replace risky cladding at an estimated cost of £400 million, the prime minister has announced.

Risky cladding on 158 tower blocks will replaced in the next two years, Theresa May announced today as she promised the Government would bear the cost of the work.

Theresa May confirmed the risky materials would be removed during Prime Minister's Questions earlier today.

Mrs May said that, since the Grenfell Tower fire killed 71 people in west London last June, fire services had visited more than 1,250 high-rise buildings, and immediate action had been taken to ensure the safety of every resident. Weeks after the fire, the government said survivors would be offered permanent furnished social housing within 12 months.

She said: 'As we approach the anniversary of the appalling tragedy that was the Grenfell Tower fire our thoughts are with the victims and survivors and all those affected by that tragedy'. What was a national disaster is now becoming a national disgrace'.

Labour had been preparing to use an opposition day debate in the Commons to question ministers on building safety for high-rise blocks.

"Work has already started on 104 of these", she added.

The state's yearlong inquiry found at least 70 buildings so far requiring rectification work for the cladding, with about 880 structures needing further inspections, reported the ABC News channel.

Speaking in Prime Ministers Questions, May said an estimated £400million would be spent on high rise buildings owned by councils and housing associations across England to render them safe.

The review is expected to be released by the state government on Thursday.
