Emilia Clarke insists there's no pay gap problem on Game of Thrones

British actress Emilia Clarke

The British Game of Thrones actress plays supporting character Qi'ra in the Star Wars origin story for popular character Han Solo, but she's clearly stealing the show during this promo tour.

'It will be what none of us think it will be, ' she said. "It's really hard because this is a problem that has been around forever so changing it overnight is impossible".

"It starts with the little things, when you say an opinion or idea or concept and it doesn't get picked up in a discussion and then a dude says it and suddenly we're doing it!"

In an interview for Kering Women in Motion at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, where her film "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is screening, Clarke said that her starring role on "Game of Thrones" comes with a gender-neutral paycheck.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Clarke discussed changing directors mid-way through the "Solo" shoot and the final season of "Thrones", which she is in the middle of filming as the steel-willed Daenerys Targaryen. For Clarke who grew up in London in an "incredibly equal" household where her marketing executive mother "was the one who brought back the bacon", it was a shock. Are you telling me there's another option, that there's a weak option? "So I think it's mainly in the beginning, just be aware of that and going, 'Can you just check?'" she said about negotiating pay. She supports United States actress Frances McDormand's rousing Oscars call for clauses imposing quotas for diversity in film casts and crews.

Outside of her ongoing movie projects, Clarke is also dipping her toes in screenwriting and plans to start her own production company in a bid to "tell really good stories". "And we got to revisit stuff that normally you don't get to have a second chance on", Clarke explained to Variety.
