Ray Wilson England 1966 World Cup winner dies aged 83

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2004, but until recently was still a regular visitor to the Kirklees Stadium for home matches.

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has expressed his sadness at the news that his former England team-mate Ray Wilson has passed away at the age of 83.

Huddersfield announced Wilson's death on Wednesday.

He spent most of his club career at Huddersfield Town before moving to Everton, where he was an FA Cup victor just months before his World Cup triumph.

"Ray is arguably the most successful and best-known player ever to pull on a Huddersfield Town shirt, having been a key member of England's World Cup-winning team in 1966".

He made 63 appearances for England from 1960-68 before a knee injury forced the end of his global career.

Wilson finished his career with spells at lower-league Oldham and then Bradford, where he was caretaker manager for a short stint after retirement.

Wilson ended his football career in 1971 and subsequently worked as an undertaker for more than 25 years.

The Twitter account of fellow World Cup victor Jimmy Greaves tweeted: "RIP Ray Wilson".

He had been part of the England squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile and had played in all three group games prior to the side's elimination, but his impressive performances meant he was a certainty for the competition when it came to England four years later.
