Gaza Killings: Ireland Summons Israeli Ambassador

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has condemned Monday's carnage in the Gaza Strip as "an act of provocation and a violation of global law".

Belgium on Tuesday demanded a United Nations inquiry into the violence in Gaza and summoned Israel´s ambassador to the foreign ministry after she described all the Palestinian victims as "terrorists".

A spokesperson for the Minister said: 'Our mission in Ramallah reports that emergency responders in Gaza and the Strips health services are overwhelmed with the level of casualties.

The statement added, 'Ireland is also very disturbed by the injuries suffered by health workers as reported by the WHO: 211 recorded attacks against health workers in Gaza attending the large numbers of injured during the mass demonstrations at the border fence.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians attended Hamas-organized protests on the Gaza border and hundreds of others clashed with Israeli troops on the outskirts of Jerusalem and in other locations in the West Bank, marking the 70th anniversary of what they call the Nakba, or "catastrophe", of Israel's creation in 1948, as well as protesting the relocation of the United States embassy to Israel's capital on Monday afternoon.

The Republic of Ireland's minister for foreign affairs has met the Israeli ambassador after summoning him to express "outrage" at the deaths and injuries in Gaza.

"We obviously are going to apply our minds with Cabinet colleagues, and we will respond in due course at the soonest available opportunity", he said.

The White House also blamed Hamas for the violence.

The minister reiterated that South Africa's view was that the Israeli soldiers must withdraw from the Gaza Strip and bring to an end the violent and destructive incursions into Palestinian territories.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has urged Israel to show restraint in the Gaza Strip amid the rallies. Despite the bloodshed, the embassy inauguration went on as planned in Jerusalem.

He called on the global community to take "immediate action" and try Israeli leaders as "war criminals in worldwide courts". "We stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine but words alone are not enough".

"It is driving the global scene to a kind of security chaos", he added.

This as thousands descended on the city for the Great Return March to mark the 70th anniversary of "Nakba", when thousands of Palestinians were displaced by the creation of the new state of Israel in 1948.

The US decision to transfer its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, while welcomed by Israel, infuriated the Palestinians and was widely criticized by the global community.
