Guatemala's Embassy Opens in Jerusalem After Relocation From Tel Aviv

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales

Guatemala opened an Embassy, in Jerusalem, on Wednesday, two days after the USA made the same move.

Earlier it was reported that Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales arrived in Israel amid violent protests in the Gaza Strip triggered by the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem.

"You were always among the first", he said.

Guatemala is one of only seven countries that sided with the U.S. on the moving of its embassy to Jerusalem, a move that received worldwide backlash.

President Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December, triggering a joyous reaction from Netanyahu's government.

Since the 1967 war when Israel occupied East Jerusalem, the worldwide community, as documented in a multitude of United Nations resolutions, supported the establishment of a Palestinian state on the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as the capital.

Ramadan to start on Thursday in Bahrain
Increasingly common are Ramadan tents in five-star hotels that offer lavish and pricey meals from sunset to sunrise. Ramadan is a 30 day period of fasting recognizing the completion of the holy book by the Prophet Muhammad.

The US and Guatemalan moves break with decades of global consensus.

Over 60 people, including several children, were killed and more than 2,700 others were injured in clashes between the Palestinians and Israeli forces.

The Gaza protesters set tires ablaze, sending up thick plumes of black smoke, and hurled firebombs and stones toward Israeli troops across the border.

"This is the beginning of something extraordinary, " Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the dedication of the new embassy on the third floor of a high-rise office building in the Malha Technological Park in Jerusalem. "And we'd also like to see Israel Streets in Guatemala".

No country in the world recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital up until December 2017, when Trump declared it as such, breaking with decades of U.S. policy favouring the division of Jerusalem between Israel and a future Palestinian state.
