Israel, Palestinians spar over new Jerusalem embassies

Israel says its planes bombed militant targets in Gaza Israel says its planes bombed milita

Gaza/Jerusalem: Palestinian protests on the Gaza-Israel border have dropped off over the past two days, amid reports that Egyptian officials intervened to restore calm after dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire.

In an interview with Baladna TV, a private Palestinian news outlet that broadcasts via Facebook, senior Hamas official Salah Bardawil said 50 out of the almost 60 protesters killed Monday were Hamas members, with the others being "from the people".

Some 116 Palestinians have been killed since the protests began.

"I ask my colleagues here in the Security Council, who among us would accept this type of activity on your border?"

One Gaza resident living near one of the targets was slightly hurt by fragmentation from the air strike, Gaza medical officials said. "In fact, the record of several countries here today suggest that they would be less restrained".

"It's not a coincidence that Guatemala is opening its embassy in Jerusalem right among the first". "It reflects the will of the American people".

The transfer of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem had already incensed Palestinians, who claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Israel has sought to fend off worldwide criticism over Monday's violence, with the United States strongly backing its close ally and blaming the deaths on Hamas. It is the ancient capital of the Jewish people.

Feinstein called on protesters to "remain peaceful", but appeared to lay much of the blame on the embassy opening and what she suggested was a lack of restraint by Israel.

He warned of serious consequences of the Israeli unilateral measures that seek to impose a new reality on the ground, undermine peace efforts and alter the Arabic identity of Jerusalem. The terrorists mixed in with civilians and fired shots and hurled pipe bombs at Israeli soldiers guarding the border, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

Israel says Hamas militants have also tried to carry out bombing and shooting attacks under the cover of the protests.

The high casualty toll triggered a diplomatic backlash against Israel and new charges of excessive use of force against unarmed protesters.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also proposed an investigation, after a deadly protest in Gaza in March. These clashes occurred mainly in the Gaza Strip and coincided with the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem - a highly controversial move as the status of the city remains a subject of major dispute between Israel and the Palestinians.

Monday's protests coincided with the transfer of the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which has deeply angered the Palestinians who see the Israeli-annexed eastern sector of the city as the capital of their future state. There are 85 other countries, including Canada, that have diplomatic relations with Israel and not one of them has an embassy in Jerusalem.
