Israel strikes Iranian targets in Syria after rocket fire on Golan Heights

Golan attack indicates new phase: Nasrallah

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate halt to "all hostile acts" to avoid "a new conflagration" in the Middle East after Israeli forces bombed Iranian targets inside Syria.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted an unidentified security official as saying Israel's attacks inside Syria were the most extensive since the two nations signed a disengagement agreement after the October war of 1973.

However, when Iran supports the Palestinians it has many people's support, as does Israel when it strikes Iran's forces in Syria, and the Palestinians when Israel attacks them.

Israel became concerned about the possible arrival of a new defense system in Syria after a wave of airstrikes on targets in Syrian by French, British and US fighter planes in April. It says Israel also fired over 10 tactical surface-to-surface missiles.

"This event is not over", he said.

The raid struck the area of Kisweh south of Damascus late Tuesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. One video posted online showed a large explosion and shrapnel flying in the air. Abdurrahman says it is not immediately clear if Iranians were among those killed. Syrian air defenses fired at two Israeli missiles, destroying both, SANA said.

Al-Ikhbariya TV said Israel also targeted military posts in southern Suweida province, including an air base, and struck near Homs in central Syria.

Avigdor Lieberman's comments were followed by threats from an Iranian cleric that Tel Aviv or Haifa would be in danger if Israel did "anything foolish".

Eight Iranians were among 15 foreign pro-regime fighters killed in a suspected Israeli strike in Syria on a weapons depot of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, a war monitor said Wednesday.

The remaining casualties were not Syrian, it said, but it did not disclose their nationalities.

Syrian media said it was the first time in years that Syrians had fired at Israeli forces in the Golan Heights.

Tehran is wary of a wider military conflagration with Israel that could jeopardize its military achievements in Syria at a time when it is trying to salvage the global nuclear deal and may be limited in its ability to strike back.

US Air Force apologises for Yanny/Laurel joke about killing people
In a statement, US officials said the A-10s did the job, as the officials said the Taliban's attempted raid was "unsuccessful". The internet is up in arms about an audio clip where a computer-generated voice is either saying "Yanny" or "Laurel."

In February, Israel shot down what it said was an armed Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace.

Missiles rise over Damascus early Thursday during an Israeli attack on Iranian military targets in Syria, a furious response to an Iranian rocket atta. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility.

"The Israelis want to make this into an Iran-Israel thing, but it isn't".

Israel anxious installation of the defense systems could upset the balance of power in Syria and could make Israeli aircraft penetration more hard.

But the war in Syria has greatly increased the proximity of Iranian-backed forces to Israel's borders. For more on this and other worldwide news we turn to our Ro Aram...

Earlier Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Victory Day, which marks the 1945 defeat of Nazi Germany.

Another possible group, Tamimi said, was a Palestinian organization linked to Hezbollah and the IRGC, such as the "Force of Return", which is now fighting for the regime of Bashar Assad in the Yarmouk camp outside Damascus.

But if they do escalate, the region could face one of its worst cross-border conflicts in decades, one that could potentially drag in the United States, a major ally of Israel, and Russian Federation, which is Syria's mightiest ally. "Certainly, it is Israel's right to take such steps as necessary to defend itself against this aggression".

"I think that matters were presented in a direct and forthright manner, and this is important. These matters are very important to Israel's security at all times and especially at this time", he said. He calls it the "required rational stance in a mad region". Israel has warned it will not tolerate its archenemy Iran establishing a military presence on its doorstep.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron are calling for de-escalation in the Middle East after an alleged Iranian rocket barrage on Israeli positions in the Golan Heights prompted Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in Syria. Israel fears that will allow Iran to more easily transfer weapons to Hezbollah, Lebanon's powerful Shiite guerrilla force, and reinforce the militant group's influence over the region. "If we get rain, they'll get a flood".

The two sides have been on a collision course for months.
