Mavcom lodges police report against Tony Fernandes over claim

Fernandes says he came under pressure before Malaysia's election

Following the accusations made by Fernandes, seen as "extremely serious" by MAVCOM, the agency will lodge a complaint to the police.

Malaysia's aviation body has protested claims by AirAsia's chief that it ordered the budget airline to cancel extra low-fare flights in the run-up to last week's elections.

AirAsia Group Bhd defended Chief Executive Tony Fernandes on Tuesday after Malaysia's aviation regulator filed a police report against him for accusing it of ordering the airline to cancel extra flights during a recent election.

On April 19 and April 20, Mavcom Executive Chairman General Tan Sri Dato' Sri Abdullah Ahmad RMAF (Rtd) had communicated with all airlines to seek clarification if there was sufficient demand for the additional flights requested.

Expressing his disappointment with the commission, Fernandes said Mavcom should remain independent and treat all industry players fairly.

"We respectfully hope for your kind consideration on how best to shape an ideal cost environment for low-priced airlines like AirAsia, not just to grow but thrive for the benefit of the nation", he said.

AirAsia said it would also cooperate with the police and take all actions to protect the interests of the airline as well as its CEO.

United States sanctions financial leaders in Iran, Iraq over Hezbollah funds
Iran's foreign minister had said last week that the nation will not renegotiate the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Treasury Department also issued economic sanctions against another top official, in addition to Seif.

Three days later, Mavcom said it had received a revised flight application for 66 additional flights from AirAsia superceding its earlier applications.

"Within 24 hours, we were summoned by MAVCOM, and told to cancel all those flights".

In light of the stated facts of the matter, the Commission views Tony Fernandes' accusation against Mavcom of informing AirAsia to cancel "120 extra flights which would have carried 26,000 people on top of our normal flights" as baseless and malicious.

"However, on April 23 at 8.17am, the commission received a revised flight application for 66 additional flights for the period of May 6 to May 13, 2018, from AirAsia, superseding its earlier applications". The airline had also specified that its previous applications should be disregarded, said Mavcom.

It was reported that Tony claimed that he was under a lot of pressure before GE14 from the Barisan Nasional-led government.

On May 13, Tony released another video to apologise.
