Mets minute: Yoenis Cespedes to DL, Phillip Evans recalled

New York Mets outfielder Cespedes heads to 10-day disabled list

Cespedes last played on Sunday in which he actually went 2-4 with a solo home run.

They didn't need him in a 12-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, but there was a unsafe notion that the team was going to let Cespedes try and play through the injury, something he has done before with disastrous results.

The Mets placed Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hip flexor, retroactive to Monday.

Cespedes played through the injury for more than a week before getting an MRI on Tuesday morning, which revealed the strain.

Sports betting at Monmouth Park delayed until June
The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention has also taken issue with the recent ruling. Stephen Breyer issued an opinion that concurred in part and dissented in part.

Manager Mickey Callaway said he would only use Cespedes as a pinch hitter on Tuesday if the game was on the line.

"He was improving while he was playing, and that kind of stopped", Callaway said. "So let's take a different route". In 2016, he dealt with a quad injury, and last season he was limited to 81 games with hamstring injuries. For the season, the 32-year old is hitting.255/.316/.474 with eight home runs and 28 RBI. He'll aim to return when first eligible next Thursday.

Callaway said Cespedes has done "everything we asked of him" to keep his legs healthy. "It's just wear and tear on the body through the major league season that everybody goes through". In a corresponding move, Phillip Evans was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to provide some extra depth in the outfield.
