Physically active workers risk an early death

Getting a Lot of Physical Activity at Work May Actually Be Bad For You

Not getting enough exercise is linked to a number of health problems, including obesity, heart disease, diabetes and even some forms of dementia.

The finding, from scientists in the Netherlands, reveals an apparent "physical activity paradox" where exercise can be harmful at work but beneficial to health when performed in leisure time.

"International guidelines encourage people to engage in 30 minutes of at least moderate intensity physical activity daily‚ but these guidelines do not distinguish between occupational‚ leisure time and transportation related physical activity‚" he said.

Coenen came to a conclusion that people who were more active and did physical work had 18% of the higher risk of shortened lifespan as compared to that of people who had relaxing occupations.

An global team of researchers led by Pieter Coenen chose to carry out a systematic review of evidence regarding the association between occupational physical activity and all-cause mortality.

Germany reveal provisional squad for 2018 World Cup
Grindel struck a more conciliatory note on Tuesday, saying , "People can make mistakes and we have to keep things in perspective". Petersen helped his club stay in the Bundesliga with 15 goals in 32 league appearances, eight of those as a substitute.

Pieter Coenen, a public health researcher at VU University medical centre in Amsterdam, said the reason for the disparity is unclear, but he believes it may reflect the different types of exercise people get at work compared with those in their free time.

In fact, they found that some physical activity is associated with a higher risk of dying early. He points to a study previous year of half a million people in China that found physical activity had health benefits whether it was at work or in leisure time. Although the results might seem a little contradictory to all the advantages of exercising but according to Coenen, the studies were based on the leisure-time physical activity. People who consider exercising as a part of an activity basically stay energetic for a short duration and take small breaks in between when they are exhausted. "They may get very limited rest breaks; their heart rate and blood pressure are consistently high over the entire day".

"Our hypothesis is that these kinds of activities actually strain your cardiovascular system rather than help you to improve the fitness of your cardiovascular system".

He says that it's all down to the type of exercise you do in your spare time, versus occupational physical activity. The studies were conducted in 1960-2010 years, they involved nearly 200 thousand people. The studies they added considered majorly the lifestyle aspects of smoking and alcohol consumption, etc. Coenen realized that not all of the studies regulated the harmful effects.
