Probe into Chechen-born Paris attacker widens

One dead, several injured in Paris knife attack

One victim died from a wound to the neck and two were severely wounded in the attack Saturday near the Paris Opera, which French authorities are treating as a terrorist attack, Le Monde reported.

The alleged attacker, Khamzat Azimov, was a French citizen born in Chechnya who stabbed five people with a knife before being shot and killed by police.

The assailant was later killed by the police. The friend, arrested in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, was born in 1997, a source said.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, but provided no proof.

Although Azimov had no criminal record, he had been on both of France's main watchlists for suspected radicals - the so-called "S file" and a more targeted File for the Prevention of Terrorist Radicalization (FSPRT), which focuses on people judged to be terror threats - since 2016.

Hundreds of fighters from Chechnya have joined ISIL groups in recent years, following two bloody separatist wars against Russian-backed authorities in the 1990s and 2000s.

World oil prices reach maximum since 2014
But they warned there was a risk that deteriorating conditions in Iran would push prices to $100, a level not seen since 2014. At the same time, the analysts said the global economy is growing at a healthy pace and supporting higher demand for oil.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said on the Telegram messenging app that Azimov had obtained a Russian passport when he was 14, before obtaining French nationality. He said that while the 21-year-old man was born in Chechnya, he had spent nearly his entire life in France.

Some 130 people were killed and scores more injured after ISIS gunmen and suicide bombers carried out a wave of coordinated attacks across Paris in November 2015, targeting a football stadium, a string of cafés and restaurants and the Bataclan concert hall.

About half of the almost 20,000 people on the FSPRT watchlist are under active surveillance.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen asked in a tweet what the list was for if it wasn't used to stop potential attackers.

"At this stage, based on the one hand on the account of witnesses who said the attacker cried "Allahu akbar" (God is great in Arabic) while attacking passersby with a knife, and given the modus operandi, we have turned this over to the counterterrorist section of the Paris prosecutor's office", Molins told reporters from the scene.

He rejected criticism from opponents of President Emmanuel Macron that the government was not doing enough to stem such attacks, saying: "Zero risk does not exist".
