Real Madrid back FIFA's plans for 24-team Club World Cup

Belgium retains No.3 slot in FIFA ranking

Plans are said to be in place to introduce the quadrennial tournament from June 2021, which could be worth more than £100m for those involved.

That would include Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Inter Milan.

Lee Swettenham of the Manchester Evening News relayed more details from the initial report, noting nine teams meet that criteria, meaning three places would be up for grabs.

However it seems that UEFA and the Premier League are not happy with the plans and will fight against the idea for the tournament, despite Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino and deputy secretary general Zvonimir Boban having already held preliminary talks with several clubs. The 24 clubs would share a pot of approximately £1.5 billion with the victor earning £100 million and a guaranteed £50 million just for participating. The other twelve clubs will be picked from around the world.

The consortium backing the competition is being led by Japan's Softbank with the main backers coming from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Last month, reports emerged that the investors had offered guaranteed revenues of US$25 billion in return for the rights to operate the Club World Cup and a new Global Nations League.

It is hoped the competition will begin in 2021 and that China are keen to host the inaugural edition of the tournament. He adds that the Swiss is expected to call an emergency Fifa Council meeting in early June in a bid to get the green light.
