Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny sentenced to month for protests

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is escorted upon his arrival for a hearing after being detained at the protest against corruption in 2017

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny sentenced to 30 days in jail for a protest before the inauguration of Russian President Vladimir Putin "He is not our king".

Initial hearings in the case were postponed last week in order to field witness testimonies from police officers.

The police officer said Navalny ignored megaphone warnings that the protest was illegal.

Navalny's lawyer Vadim Kobzev said the trial had "clearly political motives" as Putin begins his fourth Kremlin term.

Navalny was one of more than 1,600 people detained by police during demonstrations ahead of Putin's inauguration at Pushkinskaya Square in Moscow on May 5, but was released the next day.

Parents of Students Killed in Parkland Shooting Will Run for School Board
Lori Alhadeff and Ryan Petty announced Tuesday that they are running because of the massacre, in which 17 students and staff members were killed.

"The authorities have started forming a government and now are striving by any means to deprive Navalny of freedom, to prevent him reacting to this process".

Separately, he was also convicted of disobeying police during the rally and sentenced to 15 days, but that sentence would be counted as part of the 30 days under Russian law.

He was barred from running in the most recent election as a result and called for a boycott of the vote.

It is estimated that across Russian Federation have detained about 1,600 people.

Navalny tweeted from the courtroom that he was sentenced simply for "getting out on the street of my city and saying: 'I'm not your slave, and I will never be". The charge carries a punishment of up to 15 days in custody.
