Sleeping in on the weekends might prevent an early death

They found that those people who received no more than five hours of sleep during the week but then managed to get at least nine hours of rest during the weekend actually had no increased risk of an early death.

The Sleep Council, an organisation promoting healthier sleep, says shut-eye is essential to "replenish energy stores" and "make repairs, while our minds organise and store the memories of the day before", on its website.

Another part of the new paper deserves attention, says Jerome Siegel, a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California Los Angeles Center for Sleep Research (who was not involved with the study).

The study, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, found that short, but not long, weekend sleep was associated with an increased risk of early death in individuals under 65 years of age.

Once factors such as gender, body mass index, smoking, physical activity and shift work, were taken into account, the results revealed that those under the age of 65 who got five hours of sleep or under that amount seven days a week had a 65% higher mortality rate than those getting six or seven hours' sleep every day.

But a few extra winks this weekend?

He said his team "suspected" that studies that didn't look at catching up on sleep during weekends "may not be enough".

Houston Rockets to wear patches to honor Santa Fe shooting victims
The sports world in Texas has come out strong for the victims in Santa Fe, which is about 35 miles southeast of Houston . Mainly, we just want to be left alone - is what the community wants", Santa Fe HS junior Megan McGuire said.

The researchers surveyed 38,000 adults over a 13 year period and found that those under 65 who consistently got five hours of sleep or fewer per night during the week have a higher risk of death, compared to those who get a solid six to seven hours of shut eye a night.

While the study didn't investigate the direct link between sleep patterns and mortality rates, getting little sleep was suggested to have an overall negative effect on the body. If you don't get enough sleep, you wake up with that sleep pressure and start the day with a higher need for it.

"People change their sleep duration over time".

"This suggests that short weekday sleep may be compensated for during the weekend, and that this has implications for mortality", the authors write in the paper-though they stress that the results are speculative, as they're based on self-reported data.

There were limitations to the study, such as the participants only being asked about their sleeping habits only once, making it impossible to detect changes in their sleep habits over time.

Despite those potential issues, "body clock" researcher Stuart Peterson told The Guardian that the study adds much needed context. But the questions of when and how long a person should sleep, whether weekend sleep can make up for lost sleep have been the sources of much debate in the scientific community.
