Steam Link app now available for Android, iOS version still pending Apple review

As we reported a week ago, Valve is releasing an app for Android and iOS that allows users to stream games from their Steam library to other devices. That can be achieved starting today by download the Steam Link beta app, which is now available for free via Google Play Store. It will enable users to stream games on Apple TV as well. It will really need some sort of LTE (4G) support down the line - but this seems unlikely when Steam is suspicious of even letting you use it over WiFi (though the app doesn't go so far as to actively stop you).

Speaking to Variety, Valve Senior Software Engineer Sam Lantinga said that "if you have a powerful rig, wired network and very good client device, it's possible to stream at 4K 60 fps", though 1080p at 60 fps will be what most people experience.

While Android devices can connect to PS4 controllers, iOS options are more limited.

Only the Android version of Steam Link has been released for now.

Steam Link now supports Android 5.0 and above and features support for the Steam Controller and other Bluetooth input devices.

Steam Link originally launched in 2015 as a hardware peripheral that could stream Steam content from a PC to a TV set wirelessly.

Similar to the physical Steam Link, and much to my disappointment, your streaming device does have to be on the same network as your host PC. Naturally, the best experience will come when paired with a separate Bluetooth controller (or the official Steam Controller), and don't worry, there are plenty of those on the market.
