Twitter update hides tweets posted by trolls

Twitter to curb abuse by hiding more bad tweets

Dorsey said that Twitter's 336 million monthly active users should expect a series of other changes over the next several months as the company explores ways to encourage tweets that are more civil.

This includes people who have repeatedly tweeted at users who do not follow them, those who have often been blocked by other members of the site, or those who set up multiple accounts at once.

Twitter is taking steps to deal with "troll" behaviour that "distort and detract" from the public conversation on the platform, changing how such tweets appear in public searches and conversations. Twitter will look for signals such as unconfirmed email addresses, multiple accounts opened by the same user, and repeated interactions with accounts that don't follow them.

"There are many new signals we're taking in, most of which are not visible externally". The automated tools can also check on whether those users have ties to or interact with accounts that violate Twitter rules.

"These signals will now be considered in how we organise and present content in communal areas like conversation and search". The tweets also will be visible to Twitter users who choose to see everything in search.

Twitter has revealed that it is using new tools, including machine learning, to identify signals that indicate when trolls are about to ruin a conversation.

The company said tests of the new system had resulted in fewer abuse reports being filed, suggesting people were having a "better experience".

Britain's competition watchdog to examine Sibanye-Lonmin deal
A Lonmin spokeswoman said notification was filed to the South African Competition Commission on 13 March, followed by the CMA on 11 May.

But it adds: "Our work is far from done". The hope is that by understanding what makes a Twitter conversation healthy, the company can promote methods to foster more worthwhile tweets rather than their bellicose counterparts.

"One important issue we've been working to address is what some might refer to as trolls", they said.

The company has been testing the new methods in markets around the world, and claimed it had seen abuse reports fall as a result, with a 4 per cent drop in reports from searches and an 8 per cent decline in reports from conversations.

"These accounts have a disproportionately large - and negative - impact on people's experience on Twitter", the company said in a statement.

"There will be false positives and things that we miss".

In the blog post, Twitter said: "This technology and our team will learn over time and will make mistakes". "We are making progress as we go", Dorsey said.
