UFC to hold first event in Russian Federation in September

UFC to debut in Russia this September

At one time there had been speculation that a massive fight between Conor McGregor and Nurmagomedov could take center-stage at the UFC's first ever event in Russian Federation, but Dana White recently ruled that out, saying a fight of that magnitude would be destined for Las Vegas.

Moscow is scheduled for September 15 from the Olimpiyskiy Arena in Moscow, Russia.

The pinnacle promotion will finally head to Russian Federation later this year for UFC Fight Night Moscow.

However, tickets are set to go on sale June 1 so you can expect to hear some announcements in the coming weeks.

"Russia is a key part of UFC's global expansion strategy", UFC Senior Vice President of worldwide and Content David Shaw said of this UFC Moscow card in a Wednesday release.

MMA Fighting reports that UFC has officially announced a UFC Fight Night event for Moscow on September 15.

The UFC also announced the promotion of Andre Gromkovski as Vice President for UFC Russia.

The UFC has signed several Russian fighters including current lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, and the Russian MMA fan base has remained an untapped market for the UFC. Alexander Volkov (30-6), a Moscow native, ranks as the UFC's No. 3 heavyweight contender. Gromkovski brings with him expertise across the media sales, digital, marketing and content distribution landscapes, working with companies such as Universal Studios, FOX, Viacom and Paramount Pictures. Gromkovski will leading the UFC's transition into the market.

While no fights have been announced yet, there's no shortage of Russian fighters who will undoubtedly be clamoring to get a spot on this historic first event. He is now the Editor-in-Chief of Campus Sports.
