Volvo S60 won't offer a diesel engine

New Volvo V60

Now comes the news that the new Volvo S60 sedan - to be launched later this year - will be the first Volvo to be produced without a diesel engine.

Instead, they will be available as either a mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or battery electric vehicle.

Samuelsson told the FT: "We're not saying diesel is more dirty, but it's more complicated and more expensive".

The manufacturer previously suggested that its current generation of diesel engines could be its last, and announced a year ago that all its new cars launched from 2019 would have an element of electric drive, either with a hybrid or fully electric powertrain.

The revamped mid-size S60 sedan, to be unveiled in the next few weeks, will become Volvo's first model not featuring a diesel option, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based company said Wednesday in a statement. "The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment", he has said.

Law enforcement plans another seat belt crackdown
The department is taking part in a national seat belt campaign, Click It or Ticket , that runs from Monday through June 3. During the campaign, officials say law enforcement will adopt a "zero-tolerance approach toward violators".

The new S60 will initially be available with a range of four-cylinder petrol engines as well as with two petrol plug-in hybrid versions - the T6 and T8 Twin Engine we already know from the new V60.

Samuelsson went on to explain that Volvo now feels that hybrid, mild-hybrid, and plugin-hybrid technology have overtaken diesel not just in terms of reducing emissions, but also now in terms of cost, both at the time of vehicle development, and when that vehicle is subsequently in use.

Volvo says the new S60 will be launched later this spring, with production to start this autumn. The Charleston plant will be the only manufacturing location for the new S60. Ltd, has said it plans to offer only hybrid or full-electric motors on every new model launched from 2019.

A switch away from diesel cars could cause problems for authorities trying to meet Carbon dioxide emissions targets, as petrol cars typically emit more Carbon dioxide.

The carmaker is also hoping to have at least 50 per cent new auto sales by 2025 to be electric vehicles.
