Aletta Intensifies as Hemisphere's First Major Hurricane

GETTYThis year will be the most destructive hurricane season according to new research

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30. Hurricane Aletta, which formed early Wednesday, achieved hurricane status on Thursday afternoon, after its sustained winds climbed to 120 km/h.

As of 9 a.m. MT on Friday, the center of Aletta was located about 815 kilometers (505 miles) southwest of Manzanillo in Mexico. Fortunately for Mexicans and travellers alike, the storm's track keeps it well offshore throughout its life cycle.

Hurricane Aletta has strengthened to a powerful Category 4 storm in the open Pacific but remains far from the Mexican coast and does not pose any threat to land. It was moving west-northwest at 6 miles per hour (9 kph). Meteorologist Travis Herzog says June is typically a quiet month in the Atlantic with 90% of all hurricane activity normally occurring after August 10th. "These conditions will likely cause significant weakening of Aletta over the weekend, with rapid weakening predicted by Sunday".
