Angelina Jolie urges efforts to rebuild Mosul: 'Worst devastation I've seen'

'Worst Devastation I've Seen.' Angelina Jolie Visits Mosul a Year After Liberation From ISIS

The Hollywood actress was visiting the Domiz Camp, in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which is home to 33,000 Syrian refugees displaced by seven years of civil war. "It is also what the families and survivors deserve", Jolie said, according to UNCHR. "Women and girls are left vulnerable to sexual violence, many children can not go to school, and we squander the opportunity to invest in refugees", she said.

Jolie is a United Nations special envoy. The hundreds of thousands of people of the city were subjected to the horrors of war including explosions and shootings, and many residents were used as human shields and became targets as they tried to flea the city.

Angelina Jolie visited the Iraqi city of Mosul on Saturday, urging the global community to work to help stabilize the region almost one year after it was freed from ISIS control.

Photos and video provided by organization show Jolie, a special envoy for the United Nations refugee agency, walking among ruined buildings and bombed streets in West Mosul, where she met with residents of the city.

Normality has returned to many parts of Mosul, with displaced residents leaving camps nearby to return home, but reconstruction in the Old City in West Mosul has been slow.

'This is the worst devastation I have seen in all my years working with UNHCR.

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie meets

"The girls I met talked about the years of not being able to go to school, and of seeing people killed, and of feeling too afraid to leave their houses", Jolie said of meeting the family while speaking in front of the ruins of the Al-NuriMosque.

Describing the grim situation, Jolie said Mosul residents lacked medical supplies and basic services, such as running water.

The actress and director visited west Mosul less than one year after the city's liberation from ISIS.

Jolie said Saturday the global community often assumes that liberation ends with armed conflicts, and reminded that displacement, overcrowded encampments and rehabilitating affected areas like Mosul is "essential for the future stability of Iraq and the region".

Jolie has worked for UN High Commissioner for Refugees since 2001, visiting uprooted civilians from Iraq to Cambodia and Kenya.
