Brazilian tennis great Maria Bueno dead at 78

Brazilian'queen of tennis Maria Bueno claimed the Wimbledon title four times in the 1950s and'60s

Brazilian tennis great Maria Bueno, who helped usher in modern women's tennis, was buried Saturday in her home town shortly after a wake was held for her at the Sao Paulo state Governor's Palace.

On and off the court, Bueno "always showed a lot of fight", Brazilian tennis player Bia Haddad said.

Bueno died at Sao Paulo hospital on Tuesday, but news of her death was not confirmed until Friday night.

The 9 de Julho Hospital said she had been admitted for "oncological treatment" and asked for privacy.

However, her career was cut short by elbow problems, which she blamed on the heavy rackets used in the sport at the time. At 17, she left Brazil for the United States.

Voters will decide if California should be split into three states
Southern California , which you might expect would include Los Angeles, instead covers counties ranging from Fresno to San Diego. A nascent opposition campaign already is sounding the more practical alarms about splitting California into three states.

Always smiling in her television appearances, Bueno continued playing until previous year, when she was stricken by disease.

Nicknamed "The Tennis Ballerina" because of her graceful style, Bueno won seven grand slam titles in the 1950s and 1960s and was South America's most successful player.

Maria later went on to become the first non-American woman to win the Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season.

Bueno was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1978.

She also got to the finals of the French championship in 1964 and the Australian in 1965.
