British PM Theresa May faces another day of Brexit compromise in parliament

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves 10 Downing Street to attend the weekly session of PMQs at parliament in London Wednesday

May's Cabinet is divided between ministers including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who support a clean break with the European Union, and those such as Treasury chief Philip Hammond who want to keep close ties with the bloc, Britain's biggest trading partner.

Before the vote on the Labour amendment, which the party lost by 322 to 240, lawmaker Laura Smith resigned from her junior role in the team "shadowing" the cabinet office and five others left their roles as parliamentary private secretaries.

"I trust the prime minister".

In a tense atmosphere where it was not clear which way the vote would go, the government secured its victory only after offering concessions to one of the leaders of a group of Conservative lawmakers who were threatening to vote against May. The government's solicitor general, Robert Buckland, offered lawmaker Dominic Grieve a concession to discuss further improvements to the "meaningful vote" amendment.

May had faced the prospect of losing the vote on the customs union after rebels had indicated their support for a change introduced by the House of Lords to require ministers to report what efforts they had made to secure a customs union.

But the latest manoeuvre by a minority government that has been forced to compromise with parliament anxious some lawmakers who feared it would hand the European Union an incentive to withhold any agreement on an exit deal to force a "softer" Brexit.

A statement from the Brexit ministry said the government had agreed to "look for a compromise".

Ministers had mounted an unprecedented public negotiation with Tory rebels in the House of Commons a bid to avoid defeat over the terms of a vote by MPs on the final Brexit deal.

The fact is that the Tory rebels are still split on tactics, with some preferring to hold off until the Trade Bill next month to push a single market solution. His amendment could force ministers to hand over control of Brexit strategy to parliament if there is no deal by mid-February.

No government would survive if it tried to dispense with Parliament's input, he said. She tore into the deep division and animosity which she warned is tearing her party, and the country, apart.

Earlier this year, Lee had called on the government to release its economic impact assessments of Brexit and suggested the government change tack in talks with the European Union, underlining the deep rifts in his party over the best way to manage Britain's exit. The Lords have proposed amendments to the Bill and now it's up to the Commons to decide which, if any, changes they'll accept.

The first part of Grieve's plan means that if parliament votes against the government's deal, ministers have 21 days to come back with a plan of action, which must then be approved by a vote in parliament within seven days.

The government won all 11 votes in the House of Commons yesterday, on topics including the use of "Henry VIII" powers to make changes to domestic legislation after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union by way of regulations and one whether the date of departure should be given statutory effect.

If May is defeated in the House of Commons it will be yet another blow to a prime minister whose authority has been challenged several times since last year's election.

Not at all. Among the many issues outstanding ahead of Britain's planned withdrawal date of March 29, 2019 is the question of what happens to the Northern Irish border.
