Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's 'Eyebrow' Causes Social Media Firestorm

US signs G-7 declaration calling for reduction of tariffs after tense summit with allies

Trump unleashed a Twitter harangue about Trudeau after departing the G7 summit in Quebec on Saturday, miffed that the Canadian prime minister had reiterated during a closing news conference that Canada intends to impose counter-tariffs on some American goods in retaliation for "insulting" tariffs imposed by Trump against Canadian steel and aluminum imports - which the president has justified on national security grounds.

After the G-7 summit, Trudeau hosted a news conference where he said that the Canadian government "did not take" the USA tariffs against Canada lightly.

Trump skipped the end of the G7 summit on Saturday and was in the air en route to his historic nuclear summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un when Trudeau dubbed the national security justification "insulting". In a series of angry tweets, Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" and said the United States won't be taken advantage of.

Freeland told reporters that she had met with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Friday and would speak to him later on Sunday, adding that she believes a deal to renew the North American Free Trade Agreement is still possible. He had other things, bigger things, on his plate in Singapore.

Before flying to Singapore, Mr. Trump was in Canada for the G-7 summit with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K. All seven leaders had worked out a joint statement stressing the importance of a rules-based worldwide trading system. "Let's be serious", a statement by the French government said Sunday.

Since Trump's election in 2016, Trudeau has tried to take a conciliatory approach to the populist Republican president and has been careful never to run him down in public.

After Kudlow's comments, Trump added to his string of criticisms against Canada in a series of tweets on Sunday night.

Jon Stewart defends Samantha Bee in wake of Ivanka Trump controversy
Sanders told The Wrap in a statement: "The language used by Samantha Bee last night is vile and vicious". Stewart then turned to Bee's comments in particular.

"Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks, we don't think that it's a useful or productive way to do business and perhaps we refrain particularly from ad hominem attacks when it comes to our relationship with our allies", she declared.

The President insists he has slapped the levies on to hit back at charges imposed by other countries and has accused his allies of trying to milk the Us's economy.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro drove the message home in an extraordinary assault on a close United States ally and neighbour. -Canada ties but not talking about Canada's tariffs on dairy, which he says are "killing" American agriculture.

The prime minister's silence on Monday came in sharp contrast to a roar of disapproval among Canadian politicians, who banded together across party lines to denounce Trump's attack and praise the bilateral and trading relationship between the two neighbors. From promoting democracy and to fighting terrorism, "we're on the same page. We're the closest partners in the world and you don't want to see a dispute over one particular issue poison everything". Canada hosted this summit for EU, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and USA.

So there you have it. Justin Trudeau's eyebrows are just fine, thanks. He reiterated his longstanding view that the USA has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends".

CNN's John Berman, live in Singapore, spoke with White House director of legislative affairs Marc Short this afternoon and asked him about Navarro's commentary.
