Dan Martin takes stage 5 at the Criterium du Dauphine

Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step Floors) won Stage 4 of the 2018 Criterium du Dauphine by outsprinting an elite group of rivals on the summit finish.

Kwiatkowski lost 17 seconds but is still second overall, six seconds behind Moscon, with Thomas completing the Sky trifecta atop the GC on the same time as the Pole.

"Im super happy. The Dauphine is very high-level race and all the riders are in top shape", said Alaphilippe afterwards.

"I'm not thinking that far ahead even though it's only two days away - I just worry about tomorrow first and defend the jersey". What happened there was not in my favour, as they pulled really hard.

Thomas believes winning the Criterium would surpass his achievements to date, which include wins in both the Paris-Nice and Volta ao Algarve races in 2016 as well as victory in the stage one time trial in last year's Tour de France.

Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem for 11th French Open title
Regardless of who wins this year's Roland Garros, tennis players are in for a treat in both the men's and women's competitions. Nadal came in looking slightly more vulnerable than he did a year ago , in which he lost only 35 games in claiming the title.

Adam Yates, who'd made much of the early running in the stage, came home in third, 15 seconds behind Martin.

The fifth stage on Friday, the second of four consecutive summit finishes, ends at Valmorel after 130 kilometres.

He crossed in 4 hours 26min 58sec in front of Martin and Thomas.

But the Frenchman ran out of gas as Thomas quickly narrowed the gap on Martin, who stood up out of the saddle in a final show of defiance. "And the pack let me go because I'm a bit back in the standings".

"It's great in the new team environment".
