Donald Trump: Justin Trudeau's criticism will cost Canada 'a lot of money'

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau participates in a G-7 session on Saturday

President Trump reprised his criticism of Canada's prime minister here Tuesday, threatening that Justin Trudeau's tough exchanges with him over trade policy would "cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

Trump's threat comes after Trudeau defended Canada during the G7 summit in Quebec over the weekend, saying his country "will not be pushed around" in regards to the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Trudeau had told reporters that Trump's decision to invoke national security to justify United States tariffs on steel and aluminum imports was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their USA allies in conflicts dating back to World War I.

The communique - which had appeared to have papered over the cracks that surfaced at the summit - said the leaders of the US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism. After Trudeau promised to hit back with retaliatory measures, Trump called Trudeau "meek and mild", and one of Trump's top advisers said there was a "special place in hell" for Trudeau.

On Saturday Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" in a tweet after Trudeau repeated criticisms of USA tariffs on imported steel and aluminium and Trump's trade policies in a news conference following the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec.

"As an American, I hate this", Bruce Heyman, who was US ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2017, told CBC's On the Money. Hayden added that Trump's actions left him with "a mixture of sadness and, frankly, anger, because no country deserves to be treated that way".

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sparks backlash over eating Chick-fil-A
Another user responding to Dorsey wrote, "Which is?" "When a guy feels he has to apologize for eating a chicken sandwich?!" Numerous others weighed in to show their support for the restaurant and for Dorsey's right to tweet about it if he wished.

Trump's behavior at the G-7 summit was criticized by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers as being antagonistic of US allies. "I have a very good relationship with [Japanese] Prime Minister [Shinzō] Abe. And I'll tell you this: To my friends in Canada, that was one of the worst political miscalculations of a Canadian leader in modern Canadian history".

Trump said a photograph released by German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman that went viral captured a friendlier mood than what the snapshot conveyed to many analysts.

Diplomatic sources tell CNN that once the final language was agreed upon, it was seen as an achievement since the discussions with Trump were "very intense" and "difficult". "We must put the American worker first!"

The former Conservative prime minister said that while he believes the dispute is serious, that doesn't make it "lethal".

"He really stabbed us in the back".
