Forced displacement at record 68.5 million people - UNHCR - English

Newly arrived children await UNHCR transport from Nadapal transit centre to Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya

Across all countries, it said, one in every 110 people is someone who has been displaced.

But numbers have fallen sharply under Trump, who lowered the cap this year to 45,000.

We are now at 68.5 million people displaced or refugees globally. There were also 2,100 claims from the United States, but these were mostly US -born children of third-country nationals who were living in the United States before seeking protection in Canada.

The vast majority of refugees remain in poor countries, with only small numbers seeking refuge in the West.

Sixty eight per cent of refugees under UNHCR jurisdiction past year came from just five countries: Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Myanmar and Somalia.

The number of asylum-seekers awaiting the outcome of their applications for refugee status had risen by about 300,000, to 3.1 million, by the end of December 2017.

"The situations in the DRC and Myanmar deteriorated rapidly in the second half of 2017, affecting millions of people".

Brazil to take on Costa Rica, Iceland to face Nigeria
The Ticos were the toast of the town in the 2014 World Cup, as they reached the quarterfinals for the first time . Both teams trail Serbia in the group, with Brazil behind by two points. "Maybe we will cover him by two men".

While the United States received the largest number of asylum applications a year ago, it made fewer substantive decisions on asylum cases than Germany, France, Italy, Sweden and Uganda. Anor significant rebound was Myanmar's aftermath of violence that erupted in August previous year and forced almost a million rohinyá, a Muslim minority to whom former Burma does not recognize nationality, to cross border with Bangladesh to flee what M ISM Secretary General of UN, António Guterres, defined it as an ethnic cleansing.

"Nowhere is the link between statelessness and displacement more evident than for the Rohingya community of Myanmar, for whom denial of citizenship is a key aspect of the entrenched discrimination and exclusion that have shaped their plight for decades", said United Nations.

Turkey, Bangladesh and Uganda alone received over half of all new refugees past year.

Africa (excluding North Africa) sheltered 31.4 per cent of the world's refugees; the Asia Pacific region, 21.1 per cent; and the Middle East and North Africa, 13.6 per cent. Defying critics at home and overseas, President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States would not become a "refugee holding facility". As the United Nations report concluded, solutions to the problem are few and far between.

"What we are seeing in this data is overall displacement at an unprecedented high six years in a row".

They were followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, Eritrea, Albania, Bangladesh, Guinea and Iran.

Filippo Grandi, the world body's High Commissioner for Refugees, told reporters in Geneva Tuesday that the final numbers for 2017 were almost three million higher than in 2016. Most refugees there come from Syria. "It is about lives, real lives, real people, real children being subjected to torture", she said. "We should be under no illusions about this", Jolie said.

While the refugee flows have provoked huge publicity and fierce political battles in Europe and the United States, the reality is that 85 per cent of refugees are living in developing countries, and 80 per cent are in countries next door to their own, UNHCR said.
