Google Could Be Hit With A Large Fine In Android Antitrust Case

Google faces multi-billion fine from EU in Android antitrust case

Google faces fines for hindering competition with its Android mobile phone system as European Union antitrust watchdogs get ready to add to last year's record 2.4 billion-euro ($2.8 billion) penalty against the US tech giant, according to people familiar with the case.

The EC has already fined Google 2.4 billion euro ($2.8 billion) over Google's violation of antitrust laws in relation to Google Shopping, a product comparison service.

The fine is likely to be larger than the previous $2.7 billion penalty, and focuses on anti-competitive prices like "prevent [ing] smartphone makers from promoting alternatives to apps such as Google Search and Maps".

The Financial Times reported Wednesday that Google may be fined in July in the Android case.

Alphabet shares are down 0.9% to $1,136.22.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager. They have cited tactics such as requiring smartphone manufacturers to preinstall Google Search and the Google Chrome browser as a condition for accessing the Google Play app store. Android is also the dominant mobile software globally.

Twenty years ago, another powerful tech company founds itself in the crosshairs of American and British antitrust regulators: Microsoft.

Google referred Fox News to a 2016 blog post by Kent Walker, its senior vice president, defending the company's Android operating system and the "choice" it gives consumers.

In 1998, Microsoft had the most popular operating system in the world with Windows.

That, according to the European Union and the U.S. government, deprived users of choice, and the European Union eventually forced Microsoft to release a version of Windows without Media Player.

The investigation comes as Google and other large tech firms like Facebook, Amazon and Apple face a growing threat of stringent regulations and the chance of being broken up due to their dominant market share and powerful role in consumers' lives.

It's also down to a growing awareness of how big technology companies have grown horizontally and spread into multiple areas, redefining traditional thinking about what constitutes a monopoly. Google later introduced changes in how it compares shopping offers in its search results.
