Grandma strangles rabid bobcat to death outside her Georgia home

Woman strangles bobcat to death in front yard in Georgia

Phillips says she grew up in the country, where her father-in-law was once a trapper of bobcats. In this photo, a rescued bobcat waits to be fed at The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, Oct. 20, 2011. "I snapped a picture and about that time the bobcat took two or three steps and leapt", she said. "I grabbed it by the shoulders and pushed it back away from me...and I took it down".

The incident happened June 7 around 6:15 pm on Liberty Church Road, when Hart County deputies responded to reports of a woman calling for help.

The courageous grandmother didn't escape the attack unscathed, however, and is now recovering from a broken finger and several bite and claw wounds to her hands, arms, chest and legs.

But her plans changed when she spied a bobcat.

"There was no way I was going to die", she told the Athens Banner-Herald, explaining that adrenaline kicked in when she was suddenly thrust into the life-and-death struggle. "If I had ever let it go, it would have been me, so I made sure I never let it go", Phillips said. Knowing that her 5-year old granddaughter was sleeping inside the home, she took action after the bobcat jumped on her, she says.

Man steals $43,000 Banksy artwork from gallery
He passes through two large galleries in the midst of being installed before arriving at a wall hung with several framed prints . As the BBC reports, Canadian authorities are investigating the theft and have released video footage of the crime.

She believes if she hadn't killed the rabid animal, it would have killed her.

"Once I got him where he wasn't moving I started screaming for my daughter-in-law to call 911", she said. She also started a round of rabies shots after learning the cat was rabid.

Though bobcat sightings are rare, the animals have been known to attack humans and are especially aggressive when they are sick.

Her son arrived with a gun, she said, but she didn't want him to fire because she was so close.
