Gravitational "bumper cars" could put Planet Nine hypothesis on ice

Over the last few years, there's been growing evidence for a huge, ninth planet lurking on the very edges of the Solar System.

It's their collective gravity acting in concert that solves numerous puzzles posed thus far, Ann-Marie Madigan, a C.U. Boulder assistant professor and also author of the study, said. What does their collective gravity do? This cycle could wind up shooting comets toward the inner solar system-including in the direction of Earth-on a predictable timescale.

On June 4 during a news conference, Ann-Marie Madigan said: "The picture that we are having in our mind is somewhat like a lot many little moons are present in the solar system, and they are floating around the solar system and also interacting with the comets".

The explanation may come from "bumper car-like interactions" going on in the Kuiper Belt and which cause these "detached objects" to slam into each other and collide with space debris.

A new study by the scientists at the CU Boulder offered up a new theory for the existence of planetary oddities like Sedna-an icy minor planet that circles the sun at a distance of almost 8 billion miles. Jacob Fleisig, an undergraduate studying astrophysics at CU Boulder, calculated that these icy objects orbit the sun like the hands of a clock. "These orbits crash into the bigger body, and what happens is those interactions will change its orbit from an oval shape to a more circular shape".

The detached objects include Sedna, a minor planet 8 billion miles out from the sun, the scientists said.

These findings are supported by a 2012 study, which revealed that bigger "detached objects" tend to wander farther away from the sun, notes CU Boulder.

The probability of the existence of Planet X discussed by scientists from 2016.

"Planet Nine explains this really well, and we do not", admits Madigan.

Remarkably, these relatively insignificant objects may also be culpable in the extinction of the dinosaurs.

What's intriguing about this new "asteroid swarm" hypothesis is that it may prove that the Chicxulub asteroid (which ended up impacting Earth and wiping out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago) wasn't an accident-it was part of a 30-million-year pattern that may spell doom for humanity.

Experts at the University of Colorado designed the space and found that a small celestial body, such as asteroids, their orbits move much faster from more objects like Sedna.

"While we're not able to say that this pattern killed the dinosaurs", Fleisig said, "it's tantalizing".
