Harry Kane says England will be 'aggressive and brave' at World Cup

Harry Kane

Southgate, who experienced the pitfalls of worldwide football when he missed a penalty in the shootout loss to old foes Germany in the Euro '96 semi-finals hosted in England, did not wish to heighten expectations which has so often been a crushing burden for the national side.

"The aim is to be aggressive and fearless".

England's Football Association has set manager Gareth Southgate a target of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in Russian Federation "as a real sign of progress" even though they have not won a knockout game at the tournament for 12 years.

"The past can help us and inform us but it shouldn't shape us and we've got to be our own team".

Kane, who will captain his country at the tournament, acknowledged that England have been "passive" and have focused too much on avoiding defeat in previous tournaments.

"I want to score in tournament football, it's something I want to change", he says.

"There will be tough moments, and ups and downs". We've spoken at length this week about how we're really proud to represent everybody but really the guy next to you is the most important one going into this tournament.

Can Tunisia win their first ever World Cup match?

England were also dumped out of the European Championship in 1996, 2004 and 2012 in shootouts, winning just one game on penalties against Spain back in 1996.

"It's hard to look beyond the World Cup".

"We know we are not the finished article, in fact we're a long way from, but I think people see signs of progress and enjoy watching us and the manner in which we try to play".

England's players are on their way to Russian Federation for the World Cup.
