Idaho child recovering from plague

Idaho child diagnosed with plague

The child, whose age and gender was not released, received antibiotic treatment and is now recovering.

While human cases of the plague are rare, the disease is found in nature in ground squirrels and other types of rodents.

The case serves as a reminder to recreationists in southern Idaho that plague is unsafe to people and pets, but with proper awareness, precautions, and prompt treatment when needed, plague should not discourage you from enjoying the Idaho outdoors.

That said, researchers a year ago found traces of Yersinia pestis, the bacterium which causes the plague, among squirrels in Elmore County.

The child is the fifth human to have contracted plague in Idaho since the year 1940. It can also be transmitted to humans by direct contact with infected animals or their fleas.

One of the oldest identifiable diseases known to man, the plague is still widely distributed in the warm parts of the world.

Correll says if you're in an infected area, wear clothes to keep fleas out, don't touch wild rodents and keep your pets away from ground squirrels and voles.

Keep your pets from roaming and hunting voles or other rodents.

Worldwide researchers say restricting prescription painkillers in the U.S. was linked to increases in illicit drug trade online. Dr Way added that there also may be a benefit from "stress reducing" activities such as meditation, yoga or prayer.

Use flea products on pets - check with a veterinarian for an appropriate product.

Don't leave pet food and water where rodents can get to them.

See your doctor about any unexplained illness involving a sudden and severe fever.

To avoid rodents from settling near your home, clean up any areas that might be suitable for rodent nests, such as woodpiles and lots with tall grasses and weeds.

Rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, bloody or watery mucous.

Plague signs in cats and dogs include fever, lethargy and loss of appetite.

In 2012, a man in OR was hospitalized for plague after he tried to pull a mouse out of his cat's mouth. It's possible that this case came from an animal bite or a fleabite, Christine Myron, public information officer at the Central District Health Department, told Newsweek. In recent decades, an average of seven human plague cases have been reported each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The last urban plague epidemic in the USA happened in Los Angeles in 1924, when 30 people died, and since then, the disease has been scattered in rural areas on the west side of the country.
