'I'm so happy': Dennis Rodman weeps as Trump and Kim meet

Kim and Trump

Even if the USA -backed "maximum pressure" campaign is no more amid the burst of diplomacy in the first half of 2018, North Korea has a long way to go before it'll get to where Singapore is today.

ELISE HU, BYLINE: Hey there.

At the conclusion of the summit, Trump hailed the talks as a historic, and personal, achievement. Meanwhile, Mr Kim has called Mr Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

"The other problem is that he's anxious to see some progress at the summit, and human rights is not an easy issue to raise with Kim Jong Un", King said. Trump had earlier tweeted about "excitement in the air!"

The insult came after North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong Ho said the country may test a powerful nuclear weapon over the Pacific Ocean - a retaliation to Trump's earlier threats of military force.

HU: The key negotiator for the North Koreans on American issues is a woman named Choe Son Hui. She is the counterpart to Sung Kim in the US, who has been negotiating at the working level. This means that North Korea is independent from all other nations, and refuses any global involvement from foreign countries.

Even after he entered his motorcade and began heading to the momentous meeting with Jong Un, Trump couldn't help but fire off one more message to his followers. And it was shortly after that that Trump briefly withdrew from this summit, which, of course, now is back on.

A sit-down with the U.S. president is something North Korea has long pushed for.

The North Korean leader has also said he now wants to focus on building the country's economy - and wants sanctions relief and global investment.

Greg Scarlatoiu, executive director of the US -based Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, and Rabbi Abraham Cooper at the Simon Wiesenthal Center urged Trump to seek "the complete, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement" of North Korean political prison camps - mimicking the formulation used by the U.S.in its demand for that nation's denuclearization.

US presidents have always faced a predicament in balancing national security and geopolitical priorities with democratic values.

MIKE POMPEO: We're prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously.

"Maybe we'll start with the White House, what do you think?" he said when asked if Kim would be invited to Washington or his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. "We will all know soon whether or not a real deal, unlike those of the past, can happen!"

If successful, the meeting would lower geopolitical tensions in an area that involves three of the world's largest economies: South Korea, Japan and China.

"The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the USA, say the haters & losers", Trump wrote on Twitter from Singapore on Tuesday morning.

Similarly, Kim Jong-un presides over a brutal totalitarian regime culpable for crimes against humanities.

Here's a look back at some of the many comments Trump has shared on Twitter about the North Korean leader. Where does this go from here?

HU: Well, probably more engagement and diplomacy.

However, he played down the possibility of a quick breakthrough and said the summit should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.
