In India, rats have a $19000 meal

US dollars

At least one money-hungry rat broke into an ATM and chewed through almost $18,000 in cash, authorities in India said.

Police on Thursday said rats nibbled through more than Rs 12 lakh worth of banknotes after busting into a cash machine in Assam's Tinsukia district.

The rodent entered the cash terminal in northeastern India through a small hole meant for cables, police superintendent Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta said.

What they found inside the ATM was nearly $18,000 worth of shredded Indian rupee notes and one dead rodent that had somehow eluded the machine's security camera for its next.

USA court backs states over web sales tax
State director Mike Hickey of the National Federation of Independent Businesses said his members are split on the sales tax issue. The ruling could be an estimated $150 million windfall for the state, notes Minnesota House Tax Chairman Greg Davids, R-Preston.

"We have started an investigation into this rare incident and will take measures to prevent a recurrence", said SBI branch manager Chandan Sharma, Reuters reported.

The notes were in 500 rupee and 2,000 rupee denominations.

Bank officials thought the machine was "out of order" since May 20 after patrons complained it stopped producing money. Many of those machines carry a closed-circuit camera for security purposes.

According to a report in an Indian newspaper The Hindu, officials suspect that rats would have destroyed currency notes since some dead rats were found inside the ATM.
