Intel will release its own graphics card in 2020

Intel reckons it'll have a discrete GPU out by 2020

Video: Intel promises PC owners smartphone-like battery life. But the long development cycle for a high-end GPU means that this project was undoubtedly started before Raja Koduri joined Intel in late 2017 - most likely it would have needed to kick off at the start of the year, if not in 2016 - so this implies that Koduri has indeed inherited an existing Intel project, rather than starting from scratch.

We have known for quite some time that Intel is working on its own discrete GPU.

Intel plans to release its first discrete GPUs in 2020, the chip maker said in a Tuesday tweet. Intel also announced that it has appointed Raja Koduri as Intel chief architect, senior vice president of the newly formed Core and Visual Computing Group, and general manager of a new initiative to drive edge computing solutions.

"We have exciting plans to aggressively expand our computing and graphics capabilities and build on our very strong and broad differentiated IP foundation", spouted Dr Murthy Renduchintala, Intel's chief engineering officer.

Google Home can now handle three voice requests in one go
Additionally, Android Police reports that the Multiple Actions feature, which was announced at I/O 2018 , has also gone live. According to the report, the new feature works by combining voice queries with the word "and" in between different requests.

Koduri now serves as Intel's chief architect and SVP of the newly created Core and Visual Computing Group. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has told analysts that the company intends to enter the market in 2020 - a slightly faster time frame than Nvidia or AMD may have planned on, and one with potential ramifications for both companies. Rival Nvidia has been watching its business soar on the company's GPUs being sold to more data centers.

Unfortunately, that's all we have to go on at the moment - at least with regards to new confirmed information from Intel. Intel of course is in the midst of watching sometimes-ally and sometimes-rival NVIDIA grow at a almost absurd pace thanks to the machine learning boom, so Intel's third shot at dGPUs is ultimately an effort to establish themselves in a market for accelerators that is no longer niche but is increasingly splitting off customers who previously would have relied entirely on Intel CPUs.

However, the 350nm GPU, co-designed with Lockheed Martin spinoff Real3D, was ultimately a failure because of poor performance and soon disappeared from sight.

The chip, which is smaller than a pencil eraser, could lend itself to dramatic scalability for future computing scenarios.
