Italian ships to carry 629 shipwrecked African migrants to Spain

SOS Mediterranee's ship the Aquarius, carried 400 people who were picked up by the Italian navy

Italy's new government assumes power at a time when nativist populist parties have growing clout in Europe and its anti-immigrant stance will no doubt be welcomed by Hungary's Viktor Orban, whose government is now trying to criminalize people working for groups that assist asylum seekers. But he quoted Macron as telling Tuesday's weekly Cabinet meeting: "If any ship was closer to France's shores, it could obviously dock on the French coast".

United Nations agencies are warning of major tragedies if countries refuse to accept refugees and migrants rescued at sea.

Josep Borrell, Spain's new foreign minister, said the decision to accept the migrants will help push European Union leaders to address migration at a summit later this month.

On Monday, Spain's new Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered to provide a safe harbor, saying on Twitter, "it is our obligation..."

People on board the vessel, which has been stranded in the Mediterranean after both Italy and Malta refused to allow it to dock at the weekend, will be transferred to Italian ships and be given food and water.

A little more than a week ago, Italy's new interior minister, Matteo Salvini, told a crowd that "Italy and Sicily can not be Europe's refugee camp" and "the good times for illegals are over", Deutsche Welle reports.

The UN had called on Malta and Italy to immediately allow the boat to dock, describing the situation as "an urgent humanitarian imperative".

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Sunday that Rome had sent two patrol ships with doctors on board "ready to intervene and ensure the health of anyone on board the Aquarius who might have the need".

Malta's Prime Minsiter Joseph Muscat continued to insist his country is acting according to global law and that it is Italy's duty to take in the migrants, as Italy's coast guard coordinated the rescues off the coast of Libya.

SNP's Ian Blackford clashes with Speaker before walkout
He then demanded a vote on the issue, something which Bercow refused to consent to until PMQs had concluded. The Scottish MP had accused Theresa May's government of a "power grab".

"From now also Italy begins to say NO to the traffic of human beings, NO to the business of illegal immigration".

Mayors in Naples, Messina, Reggio Calabria, and Palermo stood against the poll-topping, recently installed Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini Sunday after he said the migrant ship Aquarius would be turned away from Italy, reports Italy's Il Giornale.

Several migrants had water in their lungs, suffered hypothermia or burns from a mix of boat fuel and seawater while in their traffickers' boats.

"If we can't rely on getting relief in any of those ports, I personally say we can't go back out" for additional missions, said Klaus Stadler, the captain of a rescue boat operated by the German NGO Sea-Eye.

The 629 migrants on board include 134 children and seven pregnant women, NGOs operating the boat said.

"We still don't know when we are leaving, and we still have 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) to cross with the rescued people, some of whom are in a critical condition", Beau said.

"Safety of all rescued people should remain the priority before all".

Doctors Without Borders, which has staff aboard the Aquarius, tweeted a video of some of the women aboard the ship praying Monday morning and said they were unaware of the diplomatic drama being waged on land over their fate.
