Italy's Osteria Francescana Tops World 50 Best Restaurants List

Italy's Osteria Francescana took the top spot at the World's 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony on Tuesday, garnering praise for playful use of local ingredients in dishes including Five Ages of Parmigiano Reggiano. It is the only Italian establishment to have won the annual accolade. In a first for Canada since Montreal's Joe Beef was rated number 81 in 2015, Toronto's Alo made the 51-100 list (announced June 12) at number 94. An institutional bias against the kind of clean, market-based cooking of California chefs such as Suzanne Goin, Alice Waters and Nancy Silverton is regrettable but consistent.

Indeed, women are rare sightings on the World's 50 Best list.

Singapore's previous entry in the top 50, Restaurant Andre in Bukit Pasoh Road, was ranked 14th a year ago, but it shuttered in February.

In 2017, Eleven Madison Park in New York City reigned supreme, followed by Osteria Francescana and El Celler de Can Roca. This award is given to the chef with the most votes from his or her peers.

Already known as one of the world's prime destinations when it comes to its culinary offerings, Italy is once again home to the best restaurant in the world.

Britain's Clare Smyth, who catered the dinner at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last month, was named best female chef and France's Cedric Grolet best pastry chef. Most Sustainable Restaurant Award went to Azurmendi in Larrabetzu, Spain and the Art of Hospitality Award, honoring outstanding service and front-of-house teams, went to Geranium in Copenhagen. In third place was Mirazur, which serves French-Riviera-inspired food under Chef Mauro Colagreco, in Menton, France. Peru's Gaston Acurio won the Diner's Club Lifetime Achievement Award. The event has been held before in London, New York and Melbourne.
