Kim Jong Un ditches personal jet, boards Chinese plane in cat-and-mouse journey

US NK making final preparations before summit

Crowds watch as the limousine of US President Donald Trump arrives at the Istana or Presidential Palace in Singapore on Monday, as he meets Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of the summit between Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.

"Excitement in the air!" he wrote in a tweet.

The format for the historic talks, at a luxury island hotel, was still far from clear. A US official says the leaders then plan to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers.

The fighting ended on July 27, 1953, but the war technically continues today because instead of a difficult-to-negotiate peace treaty, military officers for the USA -led United Nations, North Korea and China signed an armistice that halted the fighting.

The Pyongyang regime envisages denuclearisation as a gradual and somewhat amorphous process, in which both sides take phased reciprocal steps to defuse tensions with the ultimate, but distant goal of nuclear disarmament. "We remain committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", Pompeo wrote on Twitter. But the president has significantly softened the USA negotiating stance in the immediate run-up to the summit, accepting the prospect of an open-ended negotiations involving multiple future summits.

The two leaders discussed relations between their countries, developments in North Korea and the region, including recent positive developments on the Korean peninsula, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

The KCNA news agency heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up in pace, with US and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

Kim was the first to arrive in Singapore, landing at Changi airport on a commercial Air China plane, after intense speculation with the public tracking three separate aircraft leaving Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North. This area has been designated by Singaporean authorities as "special event areas".

People watch a large screen at the main train station airing video of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un being greeted by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Pyongyang, North Korea, Monday, June 11, 2018.

It formally referred to Trump by his full name in the Monday report, including his middle initial - the first time it has done so.

"Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade anymore", Trump wrote in a tweet. There was also no sign of his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who has accompanied him to Singapore.

After that five-day visit, Rodman told reporters, "I'm just trying to open the door".
