Massive salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chicken flocks

Kroger said on Thursday the CDC and the FDA notified them that multiple illnesses have been reported in connection with this outbreak

The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting six cases of Salmonella that match a multi-state outbreak strain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it's now investigating 124 cases in 36 states of people becoming infected with the virus after "being linked to contact live poultry in backyard flocks".

The CDC says the outbreak is linked to pre-cut melon.

If you bought pre-cut melon at a Walmart in Missouri, throw it away. Now.

New Indictment Filed Against Paul Manafort Names Ally With Russian Intel Ties
Manafort continues to fight charges of laundering millions of dollars and was recently accused of trying to fix witness testimony. There are four former campaign associates among the indicted - Michael Flynn, Richard Gates, George Papadopoulos and Manafort.

This includes pre-cut melon in salad mixes. Walmart and Kroger are cooperating fully with the investigation and have removed all cut melon associated with this outbreak.

For now the agency is recommending that Missourians discard melon and fruit salads that contain it if it came from Walmart or if they don't remember where it came from. Make sure to wash the melons and any utensils before you start cutting. No deaths have been confirmed to date.

Illnesses were reported from April 30 to May 28, and the people affected range in age from younger than 1 year old to 97 years old.

Other states included in this outbreak include Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment. The list of states and stores could expand depending on the investigation. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.
