Merkel disappointed by Trump's u-turn on G7 statement Europe 09:35

Trump departs early from a tense G-7 summit after rattling allies with trade threats

Far from taking a victory lap, Merkel told German public television late Sunday that she found the summit's implosion "sobering and a little depressing" and called it a "momentous step" taken by Trump.

Trans-Atlantic and other trade wars would have "a long-term impact on the global economy", he said at a Berlin meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and leaders of the IMF, World Bank and other worldwide institutions. In the U.S. version, we see Mr Trump face on, apparently calm, leaning back confidently with a sceptical, nearly sarcastic air, his arms crossed in a rebuff to the other leaders, bent towards him pleadingly. "This is probably not because he does not understand, but because of domestic reasons", said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Saturday's picture was not the first awkward moment between Trump and Merkel, who makes no secret of her disagreement with the American leader's approach on trade, his rejection of the deal to limit Iran's nuclear program and his decision to take the United States out of the global Paris deal to fight climate change.

Guy Verhofstaft, the European Union parliament's representative in Brexit negotiations and former prime minister of Belgium, shared a photo of Merkel staring down President Trump during a meeting at the G7 summit. Larry Kudlow, Trump's chief economic adviser, accused Trudeau of undermining USA interests at the summit, calling Trudeau's actions "a betrayal". "We were talking while we were waiting for the final copy of the document", the president said. The EU is also attending the summit. The EU has already said it will announce countermeasures against Trump's metals tariffs on July 1.

Rodman defended the talks between himself and Kim and also those between Trump and Kim as "the right thing to do". Rodman most recently traveled to North Korea a year ago as a private citizen. "It's exciting to be a part of it".

Trump set the tone before leaving Washington on Friday.

Germany, Europe's top economy, finds itself in the sights of the USA president due to its large trade surplus and defense spending criticized as too low.

"I have instructed our US Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the US Market!"

In recent weeks, trading partners of the United States have criticised new tariffs on steel and aluminium imports imposed by the Trump administration. The leaders had exchanged terse messages on Twitter ahead of the summit. But the summit host, Trudeau, whose nation was among those singled out by Trump, pushed back and said he would not hesitate to retaliate against his neighbor to the south. Asked by reporters whether he would relent on tariffs, Trump looked at Merkel and said: "I don't know".
