Mother of sick boy seeks legalization of medical marijuana

Charlotte Caldwell with her son Billy

Charlotte Caldwell secured a victory for her 12-year-old son Billy when the Home Office returned some of the medication confiscated as she brought it into the United Kingdom from Canada.

A British boy whose mother says he needs cannabis oil to prevent severe epileptic seizures is being treated in a London hospital while British officials review the case.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said he had agreed to urgently issue a licence to allow Billy Caldwell, 12, to be treated with the substance.

"My decision is based on the advice of senior clinicians who have made clear this is a medical emergency".

The move prompted Billy's mother, Charlotte Caldwell, to take the boy to Canada and obtain the medication there.

Billy's oil contains a small amount of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis which is banned in the United Kingdom, but taking an entire bottle's 100 doses would not create any kind of psychedelic effect, so low is the concentration.

Charlotte Caldwell wants to meet with the Home Secretary to discuss the current law, with hopes that it can be reformed in order to help her child along with countless others who suffer from the same, or similar conditions.

"This is a wake-up call for our country", Caldwell added.

On Billy's ongoing treatment she said: "The doctors here are very happy".

He was taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Friday after the frequency of his seizures increased. She said her son's seizures, all of which pose a risk of death, resurfaced on Tuesday after the drug was seized.

"This is about getting the medication that these children throughout the United Kingdom desperately need to control their epilepsy".

A week ago, the seven bottles of cannabis oil which Ms Caldwell had purchased in Canada believing it to be a six month supply were confiscated at Heathrow Airport.

CBD and THC are two types of cannabinoids found naturally in the resin of the marijuana plant, both of which are found in the cannabis-based drug called Sativex, has been licensed in the United Kingdom to treat MS.

A cannabis-based drug called Sativex has been licensed in the United Kingdom to treat MS.

The decision marks the first time a product containing cannabis' psychoactive ingredient THC has been prescribed in the country since it was banned in 1971.

Doctors could, in theory, prescribe it for other things outside of this licence, but at their own risk.

Ms Caldwell, from Castlederg, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland, went on to accuse Policing Minister Nick Hurd of having "likely signed my son's death warrant" ahead of a meeting.
