N Korea nuclear disarmament by 2020

Allies and opponents offer mixed reactions to Trump Kim summit

Russian Federation has encouraged de-escalation talks between the United States and North Korea.

North Korean state press played up its triumphant takeaways from the summit, including what it said was an agreement to gradually ease economic sanctions on Pyongyang and for both sides to simultaneously take steps to denuclearize the peninsula.

"Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea", he continued in a second post. "Only then will there be relief from the sanctions".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hasn't given up a single nuclear weapon, but that didn't stop President Donald Trump from reassuring Americans on Twitter that they should "sleep well" because the nuclear threat from Pyongyang is over.

US President Donald Trump has declared North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat, even though there is no clearer definition of denuclearisation or a timeframe added for it to be done.

USA critics of the deal said it was short on details and that Trump had made too many concessions to Kim, especially the US leader's unexpected announcement that the United States is ending its military exercises with South Korea, long an irritant to North Korea.

A government source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Japanese officials planned to discuss the summit meeting with North Korean officials at an worldwide conference on Northeast Asian security to be held in Mongolia on Thursday and Friday.

Sceptics of how much the meeting achieved pointed to the North Korean leadership's long-held view that nuclear weapons are a bulwark against what it fears are US plans to overthrow it and unite the Korean peninsula.

Trump, Kim shake hands to open momentous summit
Kim and Trump will sit down for discussions over North Korea's nuclear arms program on Tuesday. Flanked by bodyguards, Kim also visited the Marina Bay Sands resort.

Pompeo, who is scheduled to travel to Beijing Thursday, said he isn't sure when the next conversation with North Korea will next take place but that it could happen "fairly quickly" - as soon as the coming week.

In a joint declaration following their meeting in Singapore on Tuesday, the North Korean leader pledged to move toward complete denuclearization of the peninsula and Trump vowed to guarantee the security of the United States' old foe. The mercurial USA president took an initial liking to the North Korean despot at the landmark Singapore summit, but touch and feel will not verify the complex task of denuclearizing the totalitarian state, in whole or in part.

Trump was also accused of being overly flattering is his language toward Kim, who leads one of the most repressive governments in the world, after saying the North Korean leader was a "talented man" who "loves his country very much".

In his post-summit press conference, Trump made the surprise announcement that the U.S. would halt joint military exercises with its security ally Seoul - something long sought by Pyongyang, which claims the drills are a rehearsal for invasion.

He added that it would be impossible to verify completely whether North Korea completely denuclearized. Trump agreed to halt U.S. -North Korean summit in Singapore.

"Let me assure you that "complete" encompasses verifiable in the minds of everyone concerned", Pompeo said.

Using the military exercises as a massive negotiating chip in exchange for the North denuclearizing is a pretty orthodox policy proposal, but it stunned nearly everybody that Trump seemed to be giving this away for free after his meeting. Trump's announcement appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed. Trump cast that decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue. "Well I think without the rhetoric we wouldn't have been here". It's unclear whether the president informed USA allies in the region of his plan to end the "war games", as he called them, prior to his declaration.
