NASA Curiosity rover analysing Mars rocks again

The space agency will unveil new and exciting information collected by Curiosity, its Mars rover, on Thursday afternoon.

New "science results from NASA's Mars Curiosity rover " will be made public at 2pm EDT on June 7.

Further details on the find, however, are now scarce and the rover's results have been embargoed by the journal Science until the official NASA unveiling.

The event will be streamed on NASA's YouTube page, Facebook Live, Twitch TV, Ustream, and Twitter's Periscope platform.

During the announcement, you'll hear from two scientists who work at at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, along with two researchers from its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

The Curiosity Rover launched from Earth in November 2011 and landed on Martian soil on August 6, 2012.

NASA didn't release many details on the discovery but all the secrecy surround this new finding made some people believe that this is something huge.

For instance, the Daily Star has been talking with Dr. Barry DiGregorio, a research fellow at the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, who is adamant that the Curiosity rover has stumbled upon proof of alien life.

Bad timing: Vegas facing first four-game losing streak in team history
The one game is in Vegas - Game 5 - and you put your complete effort, your complete focus into that, and the result will be there. This team might have its share of skeletons, but it also has a sense of freedom after advancing further than it had in 20 years.

For instance, back in 2016, the web lit up with speculation that Nasa had found an "alien homeland" on a moon of Jupiter. "The results are embargoed by the journal Science until then", NASA added while announcing the press conference.

The problem kept the robotic vehicle from extracting and analyzing Martian rock samples and severely affected the mission.

The deployment of the lab on May 31 marks a major milestone for the agency, which has worked extremely hard to fix Curiosity's drilling and sample analysis capabilities.

This week, those rock samples were successfully delivered to and processed by the rover's mineralogy lab.

"This was no small feat".

"JPL's engineers had to improvise a new way for the rover to drill rocks on Mars after a mechanical problem took the drill offline in December 2016", Erickson noted. "The gambit paid off, and we now have a key sample we might have never gotten", Ashwin Vasavada, the mission's project scientist, said in the statement. It's quite remarkable to have a moment like this, five years into the mission.

Because the rover's drilling arm is now permanently extended to accommodate its new drilling technique, Curiosity can't use all of its components to ensure the proper amount of powdered rock is delivered to the labs. "It means we can resume studying Mount Sharp, which Curiosity is climbing, with our full range of scientific tools".
