Net Neutrality Lives on in Washington State After FCC Kills It

The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official. Here’s How That Could Affect You.

Net neutrality rules created to ensure equal Internet access formally are set to expire on Monday after a lengthy battle.

Current FCC chairman Ajit Pai spearheaded the effort to return the internet to the way it was before the rules took effect, and despite the overwhelming support for keeping the rules intact, the FCC voted 3-2 to reverse course.

The rules oblige Internet service providers, or ISPs, to enable access of all content and applications, regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites. In fact, some have made clear they want to have the freedom to prioritize certain kinds of traffic over others. Well, guess what: they've finally, actually killed net neutrality.

"Our approach includes strong consumer protections", Paid said.

Wood: It's interesting, because you're describing bundles that, while we may pay more for them, are going to sound consumer-friendly at first. The rules also barred a broadband provider from, say, slowing down Amazon's shopping site to extract business concessions.

The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines in December to repeal the rules, which were meant to prevent internet providers from blocking, speeding up, or slowing down access to specific online services.

The chairman hasn't talked about any of those incidents where the ISPs discriminated against content by blocking websites or apps that could be their competitors or how their decision to offer paid and fast lanes to big companies could kill the innovation that is being heralded as the victor of this repeal. Nor could they charge Netflix and other video services extra to reach viewers more smoothly. If companies like Comcast and AT&T can charge more for "internet packages" the same way they charge different prices for cable TV packages, Schaub said people who are already struggling to pay their bills may suffer.

He then demanded a vote on the issue, something which Bercow refused to consent to until PMQs had concluded. The Scottish MP had accused Theresa May's government of a "power grab".

OR also enacted a net neutrality law, signed in April and that goes into action in 2019, but it only restricts state agencies and other public bodies from contracting with network providers that don't meet non-discriminatory provisions. Our goal is simple: better, faster, cheaper internet access for American consumers who are in control of their own online experience.

Several states have taken measures to ensure the rules stay in effect.

The way the internet is regulated in the United States is about to change.

Yet critics say that's a mistake, arguing that the FCC has the expertise and ability to regulate the internet industry, given that the agency's bailiwick is communication networks. He spoke with Marketplace Tech host Molly Wood about what internet providers wanted to do that they couldn't under the old rules.

The repeal decision is now facing a lawsuit from Democratic state attorneys general and consumer groups.

A spokeswoman for the FCC previously directed CNNMoney to a section of the final order for net neutrality, in which the FCC asserts authority to prevent states from pursuing laws inconsistent with the net neutrality repeal.
