TRIUMPHANT Trump hailed his'special bond with Kim after their summit

Two Norwegian lawmakers officially nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize following his historic summit with Kim Jong Un; praising Trump for his ability to bring the North Korean leader to the negotiating table.

The peace prize, first awarded in 1901, was endowed by the Swedish inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel.

The news comes after a group of United States lawmakers also sent a letter to the Nobel Committee nominating the president for the prestigious award, citing his efforts to disarm North Korea.

The Norwegian lawmakers who nominated Trump were Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen of the country's right-leaning Progress Party, which advocates for limited immigration and shrinking the size of government.

While a Nobel award would cause consternation among Trump's critics, he also has some high-profile supporters.

Trump himself has mused about earning the Nobel saying "everyone thinks so, but I would never say it", when asked about the possibility of the prize last month. "Divisive and irresponsible from a presidential hopeful".

While the Norwegian Nobel committee is appointed by parliament, its decisions are independent.

Syse told Reuters that his writings as a political philosopher and commentator "should in no way be read as comments pertaining to the prize or to our process in what is a five-person committee". His headline: 'Trump is no Hitler'.

The committee's secretary, Olav Njoelstad, said "it is not impossible" for someone who has been criticized by committee members to be considered, and even win, the prize.

Nominations for this year's prize also formally closed on February 1, before the summit was agreed.

Trump declared on Wednesday that "there is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".
